My adventure to the Grand Canyon truely began last year when I first applied for the position of Teacher Ranger Teacher at the Grand Canyon National park to work in their research library. Although I made it to one of the fianl considerations I wasn't picked. Fortunately for me and my students at Linton Middle School, I was selected this year and will start my drive west at dawn on June 15th, 2009. There is a lot of palnning involved and lists to be made. I will be the fortunate and proud occupant of a little trailer in Trailer Village on the South Rim. It is sparsely furnished with no household items that we all take for granted like dishes and a potato peeler!!! My policy is if you don't have it you can always buy one or just do without and that will be my mantra for the 8 weeks I will be living there. The best part is working in the library at the park headquarters and experiencing the canyon. I plan to use my bicycle or shoeleather express and save gasoline and the environment. Should also help me with the daily exercise.
I will be posting my experiences as the summer passes. It is my intention to share with friends and family but also to have a jouornal so that I can take my summer back to my students and give them the Grand Canyon through my eyes.
